How difficult is the Upper Mustang trek?

The Upper Mustang trek is considered to be a moderately to strenuously challenging trek. This is due to its demanding trail and high altitude location, situated above 3,000m above sea level in the mountains. Upper Mustang is designated as a restricted area due to its proximity to the Tibetan Border and border security concerns. As a result, it remains a remote region that has largely been untouched by modern development and civilization. Trekking to the Upper Mustang can be quite challenging due to its remote location.

The trek involves long hours of walking, steep ascents and descents, and unpredictable harsh weather conditions. Another major challenge during this trek is the high altitude, which has the potential to cause altitude sickness, a significant threat. High altitude sickness typically begins to affect individuals when they reach an elevation of 2,500 meters above sea level. This condition can cause physical effects in individuals and is recognized for its unpredictable nature. These are the potential challenges of the Upper Mustang trek. However, you will be accompanied by a professional trekking guide who is equipped with a comprehensive medical kit to ensure that you complete your trek without encountering any difficulties.

High-Altitude Sickness:

During the Upper Mustang Trek, you will walk through gorgeous valleys, traditional villages, and thrilling highlands above 3,000m elevation. Altitude sickness is unpredictable; it can happen to anyone despite being physically and mentally fit. As you gain altitude, the chances of altitude sickness increase slightly. To avoid getting altitude sickness you should drink 5-6 lt water per/day and food with high carbohydrates. Strolling and acclimatizing decreases the chances of getting altitude sickness. Focus on your breathing and maintain your walking pace.
