Trip Overview
The Makalu base camp trek is one of the most rewarding and out-of-the-world treks. This spectacular trek lies inside the Makalu Barun national park, one of 12 impressive national parks of Nepal. Makalu region is the jewel of eastern Nepal. It is one of few places where everything evokes beauty in its being. It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19 km (12 mi) southwest of Mt. Everest (8,849m) on the border of Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region, China. One of the eight-thousanders, Makalu is an isolated peak whose shape is a four-sided pyramid. Makalu is one of the most challenging eight-thousanders and is considered one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb. The mountain is notorious for its steep pitches and knife-edge ridges.
Makalu Barun Valley is a glacier valley situated at the base of Makalu in the Sankhuwasabha district of Nepal (8,463 m). This valley entirely lies inside the Makalu Barun National Park. Makalu Barun National Park provides stunning contrasts, where high waterfalls cascade into a deep gorge, rough rocks rise from the lush green forest and colorful wildflowers bloom beneath white snow peaks. The unique landscape is a sanctuary to some of the last pristine mountain ecosystems in the world. Rare species of animals (Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, and Snow Leopard) and vegetation can be found here. It's known for its unspoiled nature as it is situated in one of the rural areas of Nepal and not many people can travel there due to its remote trail.
The trekking trails of Makalu will take you to some of the most wonderful valleys and villages that will inspire you to travel and explore Nepal in depth. On the way to your ultimate destination, you will come across peaceful ponds and a well-maintained trail that will take you to the viewpoint of majestic snow-capped mountains. The landscapes of Makalu Barun national park are very unique and out of this world. During the monsoon season, the trail is covered with lush green vegetation making the trail even more beautiful and pleasant. As you walk further you will see the pearly white mountains along your journey.
Best time to visit Makalu base camp.
The Makalu base camp trek is a challenging and remote trekking route in eastern Nepal, taking you through the pristine Makalu-Barun National Park and leading up to the base camp of Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world. The best time to visit the Makalu base camp trek and Makalu base camp trek is during the autumn months (September to November) and spring months (March to May). These seasons offer the most favorable weather conditions, including clear skies, great visibility, and moderate temperatures. During these months, the trails are relatively dry, and the chances of encountering heavy rain or snow are minimal, making the trek more enjoyable and safer.
Autumn, in particular, is considered the best time for the Makalu base camp trek due to the post-monsoon clarity of the skies and the vibrant colors of the changing foliage. The daytime temperatures are usually comfortable for trekking, while the nights can be cold, especially at higher elevations. Spring is another excellent choice, as the temperatures are relatively mild, and the landscape is lush and vibrant with blooming rhododendron forests and wildflowers. It is essential to note that the Makalu base camp trek is a high-altitude trek that crosses several high passes, including the challenging Sherpani Col (6,146 meters) and the West Col (6,143 meters), so proper acclimatization and preparation are crucial regardless of the season you choose for your trek.
