Helambu Circuit is a short cultural trek near Kathmandu Valley is quite popular among cultural travelers. Best time to visit Helambu circuit trek
Autumn (Mid-September to mid-December) are the best times to visit Nepal for Helambu Circuit Trek. During these months of the year, the sky is clear and with the minimum chance of rainfall amazing views of the mountain ranges and landscape can be seen throughout the trek. During the clear weather, you can witness the jaw-dropping views of Mt. Everest, Jugal, Manaslu, Langtang, and Annapurna ranges during the trek.
Meanwhile, during the Spring season of the year, you can witness the blooming rhododendron in most parts of the trekking route with moderate temperature. During monsoons, the trails may be difficult to walk with unpredictable weather, poor visibility and slippery trails.
What is Helambu Circuit Trek?
Helambu Circuit Trek starts after sightseeing some of the UNESCO World Heritage sites inside the Kathmandu valley. During this day you will also get time for shopping for the trek. The trek starts after an hour of drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. Chisapani lies at an altitude of 2,215 meters above sea level and is one the most popular overnight stay places near Kathmandu Valley.
Gul Bhanjyang lies at an altitude of 2,140 meters above sea level and you will pass through Pati Bhanjyang, Thakuni Bhanjyang, Chibling, and Jhogin Danda before reaching this village. During your walk towards Thare Pati, you can have fascinating views of the mountain ranges of the Helambu region. You will pass through the beautiful rhododendron forest before reaching Thare Pati.
One of the most significant and vintage monasteries dwells at Tarke Ghyang which lies at an elevation of 2,560 meters above sea level. Tarke Ghyang got its name from the Tarke Ghyang Monastery and along with this monastery Chiri Monastery is also one of the important monasteries of Tarke Ghyang. The walk to Ama Yangri is the most challenging part of the whole trek but you will get the reward upon reaching the peak. Jaw-dropping views of Everest, Langtang, Annapurna, and Makalu along with other mountain ranges can be seen from the peak.
You will pass through a beautiful rhododendron forest before reaching Shermathang village situated at an altitude of 2,621 meters above sea level. One of the important monasteries dwells at Shermathang Village also and it is also one of the most developed villages of the Helambu Circuit. During the last day of the trek, you will walk to Melamchi Pul Bazar before getting a ride to Kathmandu.
Helambu Circuit
Helambu Circuit is one of the shortest trekking trails near Kathmandu valley. You will witness the amazing mountain ranges as well as the holy Gosainkunda Lake during your trek. The Sherpa and Tamang settlements with different cultures and traditions than that of the Khumbu and Rolwaling regions are also the main highlights of this trek. You will also get a chance to witness various monasteries carrying a lot of history within them. Starting from Kathmandu the highest point of this trek is Aama Yangri. With an altitude of 3,771 meters above sea level, it offers an amazing view of peaks above 8000m in Nepal. Mt. Everest, Langtang, Annapurna, and Makalu are the main mountain ranges that can be seen from the top of the hill. Besides a mountain viewpoint, Aama Yangri is a religious site for the local Tamang and Sherpas communities of the Helambu area. The meaning Ama Yangri means the mother who protects or saviors the entire Helambu region. With its long history, the locals of the Helambu region still visit Aama Yangri on the full moon of Chaitra. Medical emergency: If you face any serious medical emergency during your trekking program you will immediately evacuate the place through Helicopter Rescue which the traveler’s insurance company will cover. While trekking to the highland of Nepal you may face minor health issues such as scratches, headaches, etc. For such a situation, your guide carries a well-equipped first aid kit, ensuring nothing happens to you.
High-altitude sickness: During the Helambu circuit trek you will walk through gorgeous dense forests, traditional villages, and thrilling highlands above 2,400m elevation. Altitude sickness is unpredictable; it can happen to anyone despite being physically and mentally fit. As you gain altitude, the chances of getting altitude sickness also slightly increase. To avoid getting altitude sickness you should drink 5-6 lt water per/day and food with high carbohydrates. Walking slowly and acclimatizing decreases the chances of getting altitude sickness. Focus on your breathing and maintain your walking pace.

You will need two kinds of permits for this trek. You will need Langtang national park permit as Helambu lies inside Langtang national park and TIMs (Tourism Information Management System). You will also need to pay for Shivapuri national park entrance fee as you will pass through Shivapuri national park.

Do I need a guide for the trek?
Yes, It is mandatory to have a licensed trekking guide for any trek in Nepal. Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has made it compulsory to take a local guide or porter foreign independent trekkers (FITs). Meaning even if you are a solo traveler/trekker you need to take a guide throughout your trek program. A guide will not only ensure your safety but also provide valuable information about the local culture, flora, and fauna.

The Helambu Circuit trek ascends to some high-altitude points such as Tharepati situated at an elevation of 4,085m/13,400 ft.
